Customer Number Field

We have a large (30,000+) customer file. We would not upload all to shippingeasy, but would hope to upload maybe 15,000 names to the address book. Our customers are sorted by customer number. When we used WorldShip (UPS) or Shipmanager (FedEx), the customer number was a usable field that autopopulated the rest when there is a match. Manual entry (about 25% of our usual sales via old methods of shipping) does not allow for a Customer Number. Also we ship to a fair number of businesses that are our resellers. We do not usually have a ship to First and Last Name for those, but have to enter something as it is required. Why can we not just enter:

XYZ Company
123 Main St
Anytown, XX
00001

Instead of

John Doe
XYZ Company
123 Main St
Anytown, XX
00001

Make the Name fields and Company Name Field an either or option opposed to required.

Thanks for this feedback.

One suggestion that I have is for the name fields, you could enter in the First Name field "To Whom" and in the Last Name field "it may concern". You could alternatively split the company name up if there are multiple words. For instance, if the company is GM Motors, you could enter GM in the First Name field and Motors in the Last Name field. If there is only one word for the company name, such as "GM", you could, although I realize not ideal, split that up so that the First Name field says "G" and the Last Name field says "M". This will include a space, of course, but would allow you to only add the company name.

Thank you for the suggestion Rachael.

What I actually ended up doing for about 1500 customers to import that did not split easily in excel for a csv file was leave the full name as First Name and a "." as the Last Name. This allowed the customer to be entered without appearing too strange.

Thus GM Motors is "GM Motors ."
