Thank you for posting to the forum, we appreciate you sharing your feedback. I can understand the need to automate this process more. 

How do you decide which orders need to be split or shipped separately? One request we have heard frequently that seems to match your request is a shipping rule to automatically split orders. We are trying to learn more about how merchants decide how they split orders currently.

You can make the logic very simple by adding 2 extra fields to the packages:

1. Add a field (check box) for ship individually. If this box is checked it means that the box always ships by itself. So if an order has multiple items and this box is selected it will automatically split the order creating an individual label(s) for this box.

2. Add a field Max number of items per box (integer). You can optionally add a max number of items that can fit in a box before splitting the shipment. So if the number specified is 4, and the other has 6 items, it will automatically split the order in 2 boxes and add the weights accordingly.

Just as a programming note, if the "Ship individually" box is checked, it will disable the 2nd option of max items per box

Actually now thinking about it, you can just add the optional field "Max number of items per box" because we can enter "1" which it will mean it ships individually, presto!
