Create Duplicate Shipment

0

I have used the Create Duplicate Shipment function in the past to create a label for a replacement shipment.  I just realized today that actually updates the shipping information on the original shipment, and causes that order to show as being shipped late.

This is not what I expected at all.  The function as it is implemented is actually Reship This Order.  Can we get a function for Create New Shipment or something to that effect.

Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for this post. We have logged your request and it will be under consideration for prioritization.

Would you be able to share what store platform you are using so we can keep this in mind?

I use eBay (2 accounts), Amazon and Shopify. The specific incident that
prompted me to post was on eBay. The wrong part was shipped, when the
buyer contacted us about it we used the Create Duplicate Shipment
function to pull up the address and shipped. The tracking number for the
second shipment overwrote the first tracking number resulting in eBay
showing it as a defect for late shipment.

Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for sharing this feedback. We've documented this and it will be under consideration.

If we hear this from any other customers, we will ask them to comment on this post as well!

I was also dismayed at the "Create Duplicate Shipment", as it prompted me "Are you sure you want to duplicate this label?"...  no, I would not want that, and no one would want that, as that would be what one would expect from the "Reprint Label" button.

"Create duplicate" would ship the same goods to the same customer, via the same carrier, but using a NEW SHIPPING LABEL with a NEW TRACKING NUMBER, and involving paying ANOTHER SHIPPING FEE.

Why the customers have to point out these very basic things gives the impression that the coding is being done in some far-off Asian country by people who have never sent a package via any carrier, but are reading APIs and simply trying to replicate the functions that they think they understand on the various sales platform shipping screens.

Hi James,

Thanks for your input, I can see how the function Duplicate Shipment may be a little misleading. Edit Shipment may be a more appropriate term for this since you can change information after the shipment has been duplicated.. I will pass this information on to the product team

This feature was originally added as a feature request for shippers who manually made follow up shipments to the same customer. It's particularly useful for subscription services.

This explanation makes no sense to me, as "a subscription service" would entail a series of discrete shipments, each being a unique purchase of shipping fees or postage, rather than a duplication of a label that has already been paid for and used.

But perhaps it is merely the pop-up that is wrong.  What do YOU expect to happen when using this feature... is this a new label with a new tracking number, and all other criteria the same, so a repeat purchase could be made?

The main purpose is to create another shipment to the same address so that it isn't necessary to manually enter everything about the shipment again, address, item details, and shipment type. Very useful if a mistake is made and you need to cancel a shipment and get a new label with a different tracking number.

So, despite the pop-up "Are you sure you want to duplicate this label?", it does not create a duplicate label, but instead, creates a new label, with a new tracking number, to the same recipient, for another shipment of a same-sized and weight shipment.

So the pop-up is the problem, it gives the exact opposite impression.

"...it does not create a duplicate label, but instead, creates a new label, with a new tracking number, to the same recipient, for another shipment of a same-sized and weight shipment"

And the logic in that function posts that newly created tracking number back to the original order, replacing the previous tracking number, which is what got me in trouble for what looked to eBay like a late shipment.

Probably what it should say is create a new label for this order.  What I was doing was literally creating a replacement shipment for an order that was already received but was damaged.

Correct, you are duplicating the shipment, the pop up is misleading. Duplicating the label would be done with the reprint button since it would be giving you the exact same information.

I have brought this to the product team. Sorry for the confusion.

I agree, we do a ton of shipping and we are currently exploring other shipping software for this exact reason.  Sometimes we need to ship a customer a product without downloading the sale.  The duplicate shipment sends them notification that we have shipped them the last order.
