Split a line item into multiple packages

0
Completed

We sell paint in aerosol cans which are packaged in boxes up to 12 each. So if a customer orders 30 cans this would show up as a single line item but with a qty of 30. We need to break this up into 3 boxes with 12 in 2 of the boxes and 6 in a third box, each with their own labels.

At times we don't have the full qty in stock and ship what we have with the balance on back order. Once again splitting each line item up would make this easy

I have this problem also, the customer orders 200 items but you can only spit it into two labels. I need to have it split out so that the products can go together into a box or you can make more than two separate shipments with the split order function.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your feedback! We are very much aware of this example case and are looking to address it in March at the latest!

Hi Wendy,

We are looking at this from both angles - the ability to split more than once and also split when there is a line item with multiple quantities.

Thanks

Well its almost July - much past March - this this is useless if it expects one box for all orders!  What is the thinking there?

I am adding my request to the list! It would be so helpful if there was a way to split multiple quantities of a single product/item. We often get orders for one item in quantities of 15 or 20 and they usually need to ship in separate boxes. We also occasionally have to ship one order in 3 or more boxes and would like the ability to split the label more than once.

Hello Leo,

Thanks for your patience on this. We continue to study this problem. It seems like there are two similar but not identical cases:

  1. Split an order that has a single item with a quantity ordered greater than 1.  This would result in multiple orders on the ShippingEasy orders screen.

  2. Regardless of the number of distinct items ordered and their quantities, generate a multi-box shipment for that single order.

Digging into the first one, as an example if the order is for "Toy Soldier" and the quantity is 12, if you had an option to split that order in ShippingEasy, would you always want to create 12 new orders? I am assuming the answer is "no," that instead you need an option when you do the split to indicate how many orders you want created and the quantity for each order.  Is that correct?

Meanwhile, on the second example, the specific multi-box options vary by carrier. Are you mostly interested in USPS, UPS, for FedEx?

Hello Julie,

You wrote that you want to "split the label more than once." Does that mean you are currently splitting the order and then you need to split the subsequently created orders again?

Thanks,

I think the easiest solution at least for my issue is this:  Split the order into multiple orders as you currently have the option to do.  Next - select the products from those new orders and select create shipments.  Go to the shipments screen - now you see the three products you want in that one box.  There should be a way to select those products and assign them to that one label.  Simple.  Click Click Click - these go in this box.  Print the label.  Go back out and do it again - selecting the items you split from the order that you want in one box.    I don't know how you guys got along at all before the splitting order option - thats great but its half way.

Right now you have to split the order - figure out what goes in the box - ship one of the items and create the label - copy the tracking number and then go create a manual shipment and paste in the tracking number.  Really doesn't make sense - its just not finished.

I hope a solution is in the works as I see these posts are from February.

I didn't see your response Gregg -  To answer your question directly:  We may have various items in an order - WidgetA  WidgetB WidgetC WidgetD and WidgetE -- WidgetA can be boxed with Widget E and Widget C … Widget B is larger and needs its own box.  This will vary depending on what the customer orders.  We need to be able to control what goes in what box and be able to print a label for the corresponding boxes.  I use all three carriers - but I think the suggestion I am pasting below could resolve most if not all of these issues.  If you go that route I would like to see a hierarchal listing of the orders and sub orders IE Order 232 ==>  Order 232-1  -- Order 232-2 etc  -- This would help create less confusion when the order is split.    Alternately, the best solution would be more options when an order is split.  If you already know what items are going in what boxes for instance - why not have an option to group the items with check marks into order groups corresponding to the box they will go in?  Ie Order 232-1 Has WidgetA, WidgetC and WidgetE.. Order 232-2 has WidgetB.  Then you could proceed to the normal create shipment process you already have in place.

That would be the best solution.  Another way around this is pasted below. Not as clean an intuitive as the first suggestion but may mean less programming time for you.

I apologize for the tone of a couple of my messages.  I had just switched from Ordoro for similar unfinished multiple item and boxes issues.  I was frustrated to find a simile unfinished situation to something that is an obvious everyday need for most shippers.  I like what I see at easy shipping - if this issue with multiple items and boxes can be worked out - it will be the best solution out there.

Hello,

We have added the ability to support the first usage pattern that I described below:

"Split an order that has a single item with a quantity ordered greater than 1.  This would result in multiple orders on the ShippingEasy orders screen."

When you select an order or a single line item within a multi-line order there is a new option available: Split Quantity.

Thanks,

This is marked as done? Hmmm. There is still only the availability to split the order once. Even though you can split the quantity, you can still only do it once per order, and you have to choose if the second order is going to be split by quantity or by item. . So I have an order with three items, with a quantity of 24. The order needs to go into four boxes but now you have added the option of still putting it in two. :-D Getting closer but you need to lift the restriction of splitting the order only once or it will not be useful at all for orders that have to ship in more than two boxes regardless of flavors or quantities. The options of splitting an order should be limitless per order and decided by the shipper what needs to go into the boxes.I often have customers that order in quantities large enough to require five or six boxes, all of these have to be manually uploaded into your system for it to process labels for the shipments.
