I have tried 3 different cards and have tried for three days to purchase postage and have received an error message every time.

Thank you for posting to our forum! I apologize for the delay.
First, I recommend logging into the Stamps.com site to see if the correct card is listed there:
To log in, please go to Settings then Postage & Carriers
Find the Stamps.com account
Then click “Show Passwords” to find the Username and Password.
Use both of those (the Username and Password) to log in at: print.stamps.com
Once logged in there, click on the Account Number in the upper right corner, then click Manage Account.
Check to see that the correct card is listed under Payment Methods and that the card is listed for the purchases under Payment Settings. Here is our guide with screenshots: Update USPS Postage Account Billing Details | How To
If you still receive an error after double checking and/or updating on the Stamps.com site then I recommend calling Stamps at at 1-888-434-0055.
