Duplicate Tracking Number Issued

I recently created a shipment, but when verifying the tracking number on an International Priority Mail shipment, I see the tracking number was already used for someone elses package in 2013.
Are these numbers ever re-Issued?? If so, does the USPS wipe out the old tracking data when they scan my package for mailing?

Hi Michael - You've hit the nail on the head.

Yes - USPS does "recycle" tracking numbers on occasion. If your package has not been scanned, then the tracking number will continue to reflect the previous shipment data.

Yes - Once USPS scans your package, the tracking information will update to reflect your shipment.

A note for Basic and above subscribers: you have access to USPS SCAN forms, which essentially pre-scan your shipments and result in the tracking information updating to USPS before the actual package has been delivered to the post office or picked up by a carrier. Learn more about USPS SCAN forms.
