Allow Override Product Names During Import from Markeplaces

Forgive the shipstation reference, but that is where I come from and they do a lot of smart things, but it would be really nice to Override the imported product name from the marketplace with the one that we use in our inventory.

I am currently demoing shipping easy and love the inventory feature, however this seems like a pretty common sense move to make inventory better and make packing slips and pick lists better.  Amazon for example doesn't always use the most recognizable names or product attributes which make long or difficult to understand titles on the packing slip.  It makes our picking folks possible get 2+ product titles they have to get familiar with.

This would speed up the picking process a lot.  Not sure you will allow this link, but this is how shipstation does it:

Hi Travis,

Thank you for your feedback. We're excited to launch our new Inventory solution and plan to continue to make updates to the application over the coming weeks and months.

As you mentioned we currently use the product names from your store orders on our packing slips and pick lists. As these forms are often included in the box that is shipped to your customer we wanted to use the same product names as what your customer would have seen on order placement. That said, I understand that some store platforms may have longer product names that can make it harder for your picking team.

I've added a request to our inventory queue to add support for using the names in our product catalog on you packing slips and pick lists. As of now, we are still accepting all requests and feedback before making decisions on the next features to focus on. We will direct any customers with similar requests to comment or follow on this post as well. Feedback helps us to learn how many customers are interested in each feature and prioritize what we should work on next.

I would also like to see this.  We have no control of the title on existing ASINs and some of them are not very clear as Travis said.  I often have to look up the SKU in my Shipping Easy products to tell for sure what it is.  I do edit these manually during the day when I see them and have time, but then that sort of defeats the purpose of automation.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for sharing your feedback as well. One thing I would be interested to know is do you only want to override the product name that's imported from your Amazon store/s? Or, do you want to override the product name on all of your stores setup in ShippingEasy?

All stores for me. Makes one uniform description for picking.

I only have an issue with the Amazon listings since we must use whatever title is already set for an ASIN and may not include some of the basic information such as part number (they might be using model number for instance).  I try to get those fixed when I see them but getting changes done to an ASIN is not easy.

Thinking about this just now, if I could just add the SE catalog product name somewhere else on the packing slip that would work for us and might even be better since the customer would still see the description matching what they purchased and we could use the new line to check off the items before shipping.

Hi Bill & Travis,

Thank you for this additional information. Another potential solution that has been discussed is to add a new variable to our packing slip and email template editor. When specified this would use the product name saved in the product catalog rather than the product name displayed in the store/order data. Likewise we would also add a new column to our pick list column selection that copied this behavior. If we were to implement something like this would that also solve your issue/s here?

I should also mention that as we're about to enter the busiest shipping season our development team will be in a code freeze from mid November though to the end of the year. So, we will not be able to update our support for product names on packing slips and pick lists prior to this time. We want to ensure stability in both our shipping and inventory applications during the busy holiday period.

That said, we are aware that adding support for displaying an updated product name on your packing slips and pick lists is something that will need to be revisited in 2017. I will update this thread again once this work has been prioritized.

I really like that idea.  It is best to show the customer the same title as what they ordered to avoid confusion or even thinking they received the wrong item, and we could set this up to show the catalog title down further in the packing slip for internal use.  I'm doing something like this manually now, using the custom 1 field if I see an order come in during the day that has one of those inadequate Amazon titles. I don't always have time to do that of course and shouldn't have to.

Thanks

Hi Bill,

Great, thanks for this additional information. As I mentioned in my last post we are actively looking into this request and will update the thread with additional information as it becomes available in 2017.

On shipstation, we had the option to use either the imported name or update it based on what is in the product catalog.  This was an option we could change depending on the store.

We had all our stores change the name for the packing slip and I prefer that method.  We sent thousands of packages and never had a complaint from a customer.  It sped up the picking process a lot.

Any updates on this?

Yeah this is still a problem - it makes way less sense to use individual marketplace names/titles vs a standard name/title that's entered into SE. Our warehouse often gets confused because of this.

It doesn't make sense to me either. I have been hoping for it for some time now. It just makes sense. Shipstation does it.

This would be a huge benefit for our business if we could do this.

Is this still unavailable as a feature? The lack of ability to control the way the name displays on the pack slips is starting to be a dealbreaker for us and for our staff. Each platform we sell on requires a different naming convention, but this is confusing for our pickers, and causes too many hangups and delays. We're looking at switching back to ShipStation just for the ability to uniform the names on pack lists and in our system. Hoping there's a workaround... any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: ShippingEasy retired the Inventory Management subscription in June of 2020. Our Product Catalog stores a comprehensive list of the products you sell and allows you to add your product information to leverage product and SKU details to ship more efficiently. Learn more about our Product Catalog.

Existing Inventory Management subscribers will still have the ability to use the features specific to Inventory Management, however, we are no longer supporting new subscribers.
