So I mailed a package from US to Budapest Hungary. Box is 12x12x6in 12lbs Delcared value is $320 (its board games) As of 24 hours ago heres the current tracking:

First off my first question is it showed it cleared customs once in Hungary so now why is it being Held in Customs in Budapest?

 

Second Does Held in Customs actually mean its been detained or theyre opening and inspecting it or does that just mean it hasnt gotten through yet?

 

Third the person Im shipping it to didnt buy it, thus it was declared as a gift (As no money ever changed hands) that being said with it being declared as $320 value and being 12lbs would that be what caused it to be Held and if so would the recipient have to pay VAT and or taxes on it? If so about how much would it be?

 

Lastly, lastly I just shipped another package today to the same place (also not a purchase so its a gift) that has dimensions of 12x12x4in 5lbs (so half the weight of the first) and only $70 declared value (so about 4 times less than the first package) so I hope that one has an easier time of getting through.

Thanks for writing in! In the case of tracking information and customs information, I am afraid we can only see the same customs information as you do on the tracking link provided. 

As no further detail is provided by the carrier for the why of the item being held there are two options.

You could contact the carrier directly. Once a package is scanned in any questions or concerns about the package and its delivery would need to be addressed with the carrier in question.

It could still be processing with the customs agency, but it may be on hold due to being such a pricey shipment that is marked as a gift. 

Alternately, the end recipient would need to go to the customs office to get further information about the hold on that item if it has not cleared customs after a short while. 

I fear we are unable to offer further information on the state of this or other items as the policy and actions of the customs agency are beyond our control.
