ShippingEasy uses the Shipsurance API to calculate rates and purchase protection on your behalf. Below are frequently asked questions regarding Shipsurance.
In order to qualify for Shipsurance coverage, items must not be shipped in the original manufacturer's packaging or any packaging that alludes to the contents
Can I insure cell phones and laptops with Shipsurance?
Yes. As of April 2015, per Shipsurance's Terms of Service, Shipsurance will cover shipments including laptops and cell phones. To meet the requirement for coverage under Shipsurance's Terms of Service:
Signature Confirmation must be added to any package containing cell phones or laptops in order to be approved for coverage.
The maximum value for reimbursement is $1000 on all packages containing these products.
What does Shipsurance base coverage on, and what are the coverage limits?
Coverage is dependent on the value declared rather than the amount of coverage requested.
As you insure your shipments, please keep in mind the Coverage Limits from the Shipsurance Terms of Service: This insurance covers up to $10,000.00 per package for non-USPS First-Class Mail shipments and $999.99 for USPS First-Class Mail shipments.
Coverage is limited to $1,000.00 per package for consolidators such as:
FedEx Ground Economy
UPS Mail Innovations
Coverage is also limited to $5,000.00 for USPS Priority International shipments (non-Express Mail).
Mobile telephones are limited to $1,000.00 of coverage per package and $25,000.00 per conveyance.
Are there any restrictions on what I can insure?
For the most part, Shipsurance provides coverage for commodities relating to your shipping. However, there are some items that are restricted and are not able to be insured.
Shipsurance coverage is only provided for outbound shipments sent from the address of the Insured. Inbound (return) shipments are not covered.
Shipsurance Exclusion List (Items that cannot be covered):
Currency (collectible currency not sold at face value are not excluded)
Cash in transit
Evidence of debt
Coins (collectible coins are not excluded)
Securities and other negotiable papers
Hazardous material (per this list)
LCD monitors or screens
Televisions (including LCD, plasma, CRT, projection, and similar)
Perishable cargo or similar property
Any stone or ceramic slabs
Live animals or eggs
Flowers, plants, or seeds
Cigarettes/cigars, or tobacco
The following items will only be covered if a Signature Confirmation is also added to the shipment:
Laptop computers (including tablet computers, iPads, and similar)
Mobile telephones (including cell phones, smartphones, messaging phones, and similar)
How am I charged for insurance that I purchase through ShippingEasy?
Shipsurance insurance purchases are billed to the credit card saved to your ShippingEasy SUBSCRIPTION & BILLING page. Learn more about updating your billing information.

When will ShippingEasy bill me for my Shipsurance purchases?
ShippingEasy will group all pending Shipsurance purchases and bill them twice weekly, early Wednesday morning and early Saturday morning. Any unpaid insurance purchases present at these billing periods will be invoiced.
You will receive an email notification with the total charge when ShippingEasy bills your credit card. By default, we email the original email address used to establish your ShippingEasy account. Please contact email@example.com to update which email address receives your invoices.
Where can I see a record of insured shipments?
Review which packages carry shipment insurance on your SHIPMENT HISTORY page.
A checkmark will be placed next to any order that carries shipment insurance in the Insurance column. Click on this icon to see how much insurance was purchased, the cost of that insurance, and a link to file a claim.
Can I get a postage refund from Shipsurance?
Yes. If the postage cost is included in the declared value and the claim is approved, Shipsurance will refund the cost of the postage as part of the claim reimbursement.
It is not possible to file a claim to only recover the cost of the postage or shipping and handling. The postage cost is only recoverable if it is part of the declared value and there was a total loss or damage to the insured shipment while in transit.
What happens to the insurance charge for a canceled label?
You will be refunded by ShippingEasy for the Shipsurance insurance charge of a canceled label.
Twice weekly, ShippingEasy will reconcile Shipsurance credits for canceled labels: early Wednesday morning and early Saturday morning. At these times, the Shipsurance credits for canceled labels will be grouped and refunded to the credit card on file with ShippingEasy. After the pending credits are processed within ShippingEasy, it can take up to three business days to see the refund posted to your credit card.
If the label with insurance was included on a USPS SCAN form, the label cannot be canceled in ShippingEasy. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to refund the insurance purchase.
Many carrier services include limited insurance coverage. If you add additional insurance coverage through Shipsurance, ShippingEasy will automatically calculate the correct amount of insurance for you and show the estimated coverage fee on the READY TO SHIP page.
Insurance costs are calculated by units of $100. For example, adding $100 for the insured value to a USPS shipment will cost $0.77. This unit rate, which varies by carrier, will be multiplied by the total number of insurance units that are purchased. Learn more about insurance coverage limits by carrier.
Filing Insurance Claims
The advantage to insuring for the full value of your shipment is that you will not need to file insurance claims with two different providers.
If anything happens to your package, you will only need to file a claim with Shipsurance. This ensures that you will be reimbursed as quickly as possible. Learn more about filing a claim with Shipsurance.
