ShippingEasy's automation tools can help you avoid processing orders that contain items with low stock levels. Before getting started building this rule, you'll need to have Inventory fully configured for your account. Learn more about ShippingEasy's Inventory Management solution.
To prevent your team from shipping low stock items, you'll use Low Stock Thresholds, Order Categories, and Shipping Rules.
- Low Stock Threshold: these enable ShippingEasy to track stock levels that are nearing depletion. Learn more.
- Order Category: these help organize your unshipped orders. Learn more.
- Shipping Rule: these tell ShippingEasy to perform specific actions when orders meet exact conditions. Learn more.
With these tools, you can assign your low stock orders to a category that is easily filtered for better visibility. The Low Stock Thresholds and Order Category will be used to identify which orders are low on stock and possibly unavailable for shipping. The Shipping Rule will assign the orders with low stock thresholds to the Order Category.
Follow these steps to get started!
Step 1 - Setting up Low Stock Thresholds
Setting a Low Stock Threshold for your products enables ShippingEasy to keep track of stock levels that are nearing depletion. Learn how to set up a Low Stock Threshold.
IMPORTANT: Low Stock Thresholds is a feature of the Inventory integration. Learn more about ShippingEasy's Inventory Management solution.
If you prefer not to set up the Inventory integration, consider setting up this alternate rule.
Step 2 - Add an Order Category
When we go to set up a Shipping Rule, our goal is to automatically categorize the orders using Order Categories. These will color code your orders on the ORDERS page, as well as allow you to filter for just the flagged orders.
It's best to give your Order Category a name that helps you remember what kinds of orders have been assigned to it. For example: "Low Stock".
Step 3 - Automatically categorize your orders with Shipping Rules
Now it's time to put the pieces together. Setting up a Shipping Rule will let you fully utilize the Low Stock Threshold and "Low Stock" Order Category.
View our general Shipping Rules set up guide and follow these specifics steps:
- Go to SETTINGS >> SHIPPING RULES.
- Click the blue Add New button.
- In the field Rule Name, enter a name that describes this rule, such as "Flag Low stock".
- Set the "IF" condition so that the 'Product has low stock' is true.

NOTE: there are other conditions that you might want to consider, such as the quantity of items in the order. In this case, you might want something that contains multiple SKUs to go into a different Order Category in case some of the items are ready to ship now. Find a list of all available conditions.
- Set the "THEN" action so that these orders are assigned to the Low Stock Order Category.
Assign to a category | Low Stock
NOTE: there are other actions that you might want to consider, such as the assignment to user. In this case, you might want to also assign orders with low stock to a specific user to further isolate them and/or allow them specific attention. Find a list of all available actions.
- Save your new rule and you're done! You'll start seeing your new orders organized on the ORDERS page based on the level of stock available.
