Unlike prepaid returns, scan-based returns are not paid for when the label is created. Instead, postage is deducted from your postage account when the return label is scanned into the mail stream. If the label isn't scanned, you're never charged for it!

How do I enable my ShippingEasy account to print scan-based return labels?
ShippingEasy's scan-based return labels are supported through Endicia's Pay-on-Use Returns service. To print scan-based return labels in ShippingEasy, you must first contact Endicia to have the service enabled for your Endicia account. Learn more.
Is there a fee to use scan-based return labels?
Yes. Endicia charges a $0.25 transaction fee per scanned Pay-on-Use Returns label.
NOTE: the transaction fee is in addition to the postage cost.
These transaction fees accumulate and are billed once-per-month using the Endicia payment method on file. The transaction fees are not deducted from your postage balance. For questions, please contact your Endicia representative or call Endicia directly on 800-576-3279 ext. 140.

Do scan-based return labels count toward my monthly shipping volume?
Yes. Scan-based return labels will count towards your monthly shipping volume in ShippingEasy. Each label generated counts as a shipment, whether or not it is scanned into the mail stream.
Can I use ShippingEasy's automatic postage refill setting with Endicia Pay-on-Use Returns?
No. If you have previously used automatic postage refill in ShippingEasy, you will need to turn it off. Learn how to disable ShippingEasy's automatic postage refills.
When enabling your Endicia account for Pay-on-Use Returns labels, Endicia will set up auto-postage rules for your Endicia account. These are independent of ShippingEasy's settings and are required to ensure that your postage balance is adequately funded when the scan-based return labels are scanned.
NOTE: if you have both automatic postage refills in ShippingEasy and auto-postage rules in Endicia active at the same time, you may be charged 2x when refilling your postage balance and/or experience label failures in ShippingEasy.
What label sizes are supported for scan-based return labels?
Scan-based return labels are only supported on 4"x6" thermal Labels and 4"x6" thermal Labels with Packing Slips.

How do I create a scan-based return label?
Scan-based return labels can be created for new outbound shipments in one of two ways:
How do my customers use the scan-based return label?
Scan-based return labels are printed at the same time as the outbound shipping label and should be included in the initial package sent to your customers.
If they choose to return an item, they simply repackage it and apply the scan-based return label that you provided them.

Where can I locate the scan-based return tracking number?
The scan-based return tracking number can be found in your ShippingEasy SHIPMENT HISTORY.
TIP: use the "Returns" filter to narrow the results to only those shipments with Scan-Based Returns. Learn more.
There will be two tracking numbers displayed for any shipment with a scan-based return label. The scan-based return tracking number will be shown directly below the outbound tracking number.
NOTE: tracking data will not update until the label has been scanned by the USPS.
In what sequence will documents print for a shipment with a scan-based return label?
You can opt to generate your documents as PDFs or send them directly to a printer via ConnectEasy. In either case, your documents will print in the following order:
- Outbound label
- Scan-based return label
- Packing slip (if applicable)
TIP: if you use ConnectEasy and only require a reprint of one of the labels, select the option to reprint to file so that you can specify which of the labels to send to your printer.
Can I create a scan-based return label after purchasing the outbound label?
Can I create a scan-based return label for any carrier?
No. Only USPS Domestic shipments are eligible for scan-based returns via ShippingEasy.
Which USPS services can be used for scan-based return labels?
- First Class Package Service, with some exclusions
- Priority Mail, with some exclusions
- Priority Mail Express
- Parcel Select Ground
NOTE: a scan-based return label cannot be created for the following USPS package types:
- Media Mail: all package types
- First Class Mail: Large Envelope/Flat
- Priority Mail:

Can I add a Signature confirmation service to a scan-based return label?
No. Neither Adult Signature, nor Signature Confirmation can be added to a scan-based return label.
Can I specify the dimensions of scan-based return shipments?
No. The cost of the postage will be determined by the package weight or flat rate packaging used. The package dimension is not factored into postage costs. This ensures accurate postage, even if your customer uses a different box to return the item to you.
If I cancel the outbound shipment for the scan-based return, is the return label invalidated?
How long are scan-based return labels valid for?
When closing an Endicia account, what happens to my balance if I have scan based returns enabled on my account?
When you close an Endicia account it takes Endicia 10 to 15 days to process the account and issue a refund of the postage balance. However, if you had created scan based return labels, then Endicia delays your refund for 90 days. This is part of the the terms and conditions when enabling scan-based returns with Endicia. Closing of the Endicia account should not impact the ability to use scan based return labels generated from that account.
