How to: Create a new Packing Slip template

Created:   |   Updated:

ShippingEasy can print packing slips before or after you generate a shipment for an order. Packing slips rely on a "template" to control the exact content and layout of the packing slips that print.

By default, ShippingEasy comes loaded with a Standard Template. Preview ShippingEasy's prebuilt Standard Template. If these packing slips look good to you, there is nothing more to do. But if you want to customize the content or layout of those packing slips, you can edit a prebuilt template or create a new template.

NOTE: ShippingEasy's packing slip template editor uses a combination of HTML and liquid markup.

If you are not familiar with liquid markup: select the prebuilt template that most closely matches the packing slip you want. Then modify the template to customize it further.

If you are proficient in liquid markup and HTML: selecting a custom template will give you a blank canvas to design a packing slip from scratch.

To create a customized Packing Slip template:

  1. Click the SETTINGS icon and then click PACKING SLIPS under LABEL SIZES AND PRINTING OPTIONS.

  3. Decide if you will be customizing a prebuilt template or starting from scratch:
    • Prebuilt templates provide a great structure to begin editing.
    • Custom templates give a blank canvas to build from scratch.
Most people will prefer to start with a prebuilt template, unless you are comfortable with HTML and liquid markup.

    Edit a prebuilt template

    1. Select one of the prebuilt templates from the left hand menu to get started adding custom content.

      ShippingEasy provides three default templates:

      • 8.5" x 11" are generic templates that contains content arranged to look best at 8.5" x 11" in either portrait or landscape mode.
      • 4" x 6" are more compact designs arranged to look good on a 4" x 6" label in landscape mode.
      • 8.5" x 11" combo slip arranges the packing slip content assuming a 4" x 6" shipping label in the upper-right corner.

      • 8.5" x 11" will look best at 8.5" x 11" in either portrait or landscape mode.
      • 4" x 6" are more compact designs that will look good on a 4" x 6" label in landscape mode.
      • 8.5" x 11" combo slip assumes a 4" x 6" shipping label in the upper-right corner.

  4. Now that you are in the template editor, you can use the tool bar to change the font, color, indentation, etc. You can even insert a table or a list of bullet points.

  5. In the default packing slip templates, you will notice references to fields like:

    {{shipment.customer_name}}

When ShippingEasy creates the packing slip, it will substitute in the correct value for that field - in this example, the name of your customer. There are a wide variety of different field values that ShippingEasy can substitute in for you.

They are available from the 3 variable menus in the tool bar, Store, Recipient, and Shipment:

  6. As you experiment with different content and formatting options, periodically display an example packing slip by clicking the Preview button.

NOTE: The test packing slips will not contain information from an actual order or from any of the stores that you have configured in ShippingEasy. The fields are populated with "test" values, including a test logo, if you specify a logo in the packing slip.  Learn more about previewing your custom packing slip template.
  7. Decide if you would like to make this template a default for either all your domestic and/or international shipments. By selecting a default, ShippingEasy will print this packing slip format for the selected destination(s) unless overridden by a Shipping Rule.
