Can I ship to P.O. Boxes with FedEx?

Created:   |   Updated:

Most FedEx services do not deliver to PO Boxes for addresses in the United States. However, FedEx SmartPost, which uses the USPS system in the last leg of delivery, will deliver to domestic P.O. boxes.

Also, FedEx Express can ship to a P.O. box in some international destinations, including Puerto Rico, but you are required to provide a valid telephone, fax, or telex number.

This is horribly inaccurate information.  FedEx Ground and FedEx Home DO ship to P.O. Boxes in the USA.  I do it all the time.  Just add the P.O. Box to the address label, as you would normally do with any other address.  It will be there.

Also, it saves time.  FedEx drops off to Post Offices early in the morning so that the recipient can get the box earlier, instead of up to 5pm in the afternoon.

Also, it saves money.  Post Offices are in a business district, so FedEx Ground is about $5 than FedEx Home.

The advantages are clear for shipping your FedEx ground shipments to the recipient's P.O. Box instead of their Home address in terms of time and expense.

Here is proof from FedEx's own web page "Shipping to a Home":  http://www.fedex.com/us/fedex/shippingservices/package/

    It clearly states:

    • Delivery to 100 percent of U.S. residences, including P.O. boxes and APO/FPO destinations.

Hello Thomas - Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This particular article was written some years ago and ShippingEasy's access to FedEx services have changed since then.

According to the site that you quoted, FedEx SmartPost can deliver to P.O. boxes. However, I haven't found any evidence that other domestic services support P.O. box deliveries. This document from FedEx clearly states (on page 4):

Do not list a P.O. box address for U.S. recipients. FedEx Express can ship to a P.O. box in certain international locations, including Puerto Rico, but you must provide a valid telephone, fax, or telex number.

We've updated our own article to better reflect which FedEx services available through ShippingEasy support P.O. box deliveries. Namely, that FedEx Smart Post can deliver to domestic post offices. This is due primarily to the fact that Smart Post employs the USPS system in the final leg of delivery.

    Hi Jennifer,

YES, all address in the US Fedex can ship to INCLUDING PO BOXES!!! FEDEX by law cannot hand deliver the shipment into a US post office themselves. The U.S. Post office has employees come by fedex everyday to pickup packages for the post office zip codes including po boxes. ONLY the US Post office employee as FINAL delivery can hand deliver fedex shipments into a US Post office box!!!!

You didn't read that article carefully Jennifer!!! PLEASE be more careful of what info you post!!!!

Hello Cillian - Thanks for reaching out to clear up any remaining confusion.

In my previous post and update of the article, I believe that I've stated that FedEx can deliver to domestic P.O. boxes when the service FedEx SmartPost is used. SmartPost is the service that you have described, whereby FedEx initiates the shipping process, and then hands the package over to USPS for final delivery.

If I have misstated any information, I would be happy to correct it. Would you please clarify which of my statements are incorrect?  Thank you so much for taking the time!
