What is a Certificate of Origin?
A Certificate of Origin (CO) authenticates the country of origin of the merchandise being shipped. This is important as each country may have unique Treaty arrangements, restrictions on imports, varying duty rates, and specific handling requirements dependent on the shipment's origin.
How can I create a Certificate of Origin?
UPS provides a digital copy that you can download from the UPS website for goods whose origin is the U.S. or Puerto Rico only. The descriptions and amounts on the CO must be consistent with those entered on the Invoice.
Is a Certificate of Origin required if I'm shipping to Canada or Mexico?
When shipping to Canada or Mexico, you may need to use a NAFTA Certificate of Origin instead. Learn more.
When do I need to use a Certificate of Origin?
It depends on the type of good you're shipping and the good's shipment destination.
In general, you may need a CO when the country of origin is U.S. and the destination countries are the following:
- Canary Islands
- United Kingdom
The criteria is fairly involved and subject to change. So for more detailed, up-to-date information about CO's, please visit UPS's website.
