How to: Integrate your USB scale with ShippingEasy (Applet Method)

IMPORTANT: this document describes a feature that is no longer available in ShippingEasy. The Java Applet integration method for printers and scales has been replaced with ConnectEasy. Learn more about ConnectEasy.

 

Scale integration reduces human error, time required for data entry and assists in calculating the exact postage you need in order to save you money.

Web applications don’t typically have access to USB devices plugged into your computer, so in order to connect your web browser to your scale, you will need to install the ShippingEasy USB Scale application onto your computer.

Before you start, please ensure your scale is on our list of recommended/compatible scales and operating systems.

To install a USB scale with ShippingEasy;

  1. Plug the scale into your computer's USB port and turn it on. The scale's drivers should install automatically.

  2. Navigate to the SETTINGS page from anywhere in the ShippingEasy app.



  3. Select SCALES under the HARDWARE & DEVICES header.



  4. Select the Install Driver button

  5. The ShippingEasy applet will launch. Select the Install Scale.

  6. Select Next.

  7. Select your USB scale from the list of devices linked with your computer (in this example, we have selected the Dymo M25 Digital Postage Scale), and then select Next.

  8. *IMPORTANT STEP*
    Here is where your postage scale identifiers live. These identifiers allow your computers USB port to connect to the Internet browser. Before you select 'Next', note down or copy the LAST 4 DIGITS of the Vendor ID (VID), navigate back into ShippingEasy within the USB Scale Reading section and paste it into the Vendor ID field e.g. 0922.

    Then, do the same for the Product ID (PID) e.g. 8004.

  9. Then, return to the applet and select Next.

  10. The applet is required to install a small amount of files to your computer to ensure connectivity. We highly recommend you select to save this file on your Desktop (after you have finished the installation we can delete this file). Press Save.

  11. *IMPORTANT STEP*
    Select Install Now.. and once the installation is complete, you may select Done.

  12. Now your USB scale should be installed.

  13. You can return back to ShippingEasy, select the Save button underneath the VID and PID input boxes.

  14. Test the scales connectivity by placing an item on your scale and clicking the Get Weight button. The reading on the scale should match the weight that appears in the field below.

    I have been repairing computer for 20 years and never seen such poor support. I have spent the better part of two days trying to get the M25 DYMO scale to work in Shippingeasy. Your applet is so old that new modern browsers like chrome don't even support it anymore. Then on top of that you won't support your own software issues in the free plan, So why would any one want to upgrade when support is so poor. If any one from ShippingEasy real cares please call me or email.

    Hi Ken - I'm apologize for the inordinate amount of time that you've had to invest in getting the java applet integration up and running.

    Honestly, and as I mentioned in a previous thread of ours, after we developed the java applet integration we discovered what a pain it can be to install and maintain for our customers. As a result, we reinvested our product development in ConnectEasy, which is virtually pain free. More recently, many browsers are no longer supporting Java and so we are in turn starting to phase out our support of the java applet integrations.

    ConnectEasy is included for free with Basic and above plans. However, because it's developed and maintained by a third part, we pay a per-user fee to be able to offer this to ShippingEasy subscribers. So, we offer ConnectEasy as an add-on to the Starter plan. This allows Starters subscribers who do not need the extra bells and whistles of hardware integration to use ShippingEasy for free, while still allowing the shippers who want the extra tools the option of integrating ConnectEasy for $5/month.

    If you would like to continue troubleshooting the scale integration, please start by logging into ShippingEasy in a broswer that supports Java, such as Firefox. Once you start into the integration process again, could you pinpoint at which steps you are encountering an error? Please post the details to the comments below so that I can recommend troubleshooting tips.
