What is USPS Adult Signature?

Created:   |   Updated:

When the shipment reaches its destination, Adult Signature Confirmation requires the signature of an individual at the residence who is at least 21 years of age, who provides proof of age with a government-issued photo identification that lists the date of birth and/or age of the signer prior to delivery. The USPS maintains a record of delivery (including the recipient’s signature) for two years.

NOTE: Adult Signature Confirmation does not speed up the delivery time nor does it provide any additional tracking information.

Adult Signature Confirmation allows merchants who have been authorized to ship alcohol and tobacco to ensure they uphold their end of what’s required by law. Namely that only individuals of-age receive the age restricted merchandise.

Access tracking information online or by phone:

  • Use the Track & Confirm tool on usps.com
  • Contact the USPS direct at 1-800-222-1811. You may also make requests for copies via email, mail or fax are free. Upon request, faxed and emailed copies are processed within two hours and 24 hours, respectively. Mailed receipts are sent First-Class and should arrive within two to three business days.

Adult Signature Confirmation is available with some domestic services for an extra fee:

  • Priority Mail
  • Priority Mail Express
  • Parcel Select

It is not available on other services:

  • First Class Mail
  • Media Mail
  • International shipments

Restrictions apply:

  • Package must be greater than ¾ inch thick.  Thinner contents must be placed and sent in a rigid box or container that won’t lose its shape or collapse into a flat or letter-sized piece during handling and delivery.
  • Learn more about sending tobacco.

Fee:

Add to any eligible service for $5.90 per parcel.

Where is the option for the FREE (not necessarily Adult) signature confirmation for Priority Express Mail?  The USPS offers that option for free, but Shipping Express does not???

So we either get no signature, or have to pay $4.95 for the Adult signature?

    What's up with THAT?

Hi Stan - I apologize that you didn't get a response to your question sooner. You're absolutely right that Signature Confirmation (although, not Adult Signature Confirmation) is included with the Priority Mail Express service for free. However, to include this confirmation option with a shipment, you'll need to select it from the *Confirmation* menu, within the "Additional Shipment Options" section of the READY TO SHIP page. In addition, you can create a Shipping Rule that will automatically add Signature Confirmation to your Priority Mail Express shipments. This example rule should give you some ideas: - [Best of Rules: Add "Signature Confirmation" to high value orders](https://support.shippingeasy.com/hc/en-us/articles/204972715-Best-of-Rules-Add-Signature-Confirmation-to-high-value-orders) Let me know if there's anything else we can do to help. Thanks!
