Split Orders - Totals Calculations | Overview

Created:   |   Updated:

Splitting an order means dividing the original order items into two or more new orders. At the same time, there are other order totals, such as shipping paid and sales tax, that also need to be divided. This guide describes how ShippingEasy handles the calculations after orders are split.

ShippingEasy relies on the available order details to calculate order totals. This accommodates for all stores not sending data to ShippingEasy in the same way. Using available order details ensures consistent calculations across all store platforms in ShippingEasy.

Split order totals are based on order item values, relative to the whole order value. Each order item is assigned a percentage of the original order value. Then the proportion of order item values in each resulting split order is used to find the new order totals.

Order total values are divided in a way that the orders can be recombined later, and the original order total will be accurate.

In addition to order items, the following order total values will be split:

  • Sales tax
  • Shipping paid
  • Discount amount
  • Subtotal
  • Order total

Of course, order items do not always include the same level of detail. Some order items may have a dollar value, while this information may be missing for others. ShippingEasy will consider whether an order item has a dollar value when calculating order totals. This enables ShippingEasy to effectively calculate order totals for the following scenarios:

  • All order items have a dollar value
  • Some order items have a dollar value, and some have a $0 value
  • All order items have a $0 value

Each of these scenarios is explained in greater detail below.

All Order Items Have a Dollar Value | Example Calculation

When all order items have a positive dollar value, ShippingEasy can assign a relative percentage to each order item. Then each order item will factor into the resulting split order totals.

For example:

An order contains 4 T-Shirts. 3 of the shirts are pre-printed designs and 1 is a custom design.

Sales Tax is 8% on these items. The buyer paid $10 for shipping.

This order needs to be split because the pre-printed shirts are ready to ship, but the custom shirt still needs to be manufactured.

The Original Order Items:

Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Printed T-Shirt A 1 $10.00 20%
Printed T-Shirt B 1 $10.00 20%
Printed T-Shirt C 1 $10.00 20%
Custom T-Shirt 1 $20.00 40%
TOTAL 100%

The Original Order Totals:

Financial Item Amount
Discount Amount $0.00
Subtotal $50.00
Sales Tax $4.00
Shipping Paid $10.00
Order Total $64.00

The Resulting Split Orders:

New Order #1:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Printed T-Shirt A 1 $10.00 20%
Printed T-Shirt B 1 $10.00 20%
Printed T-Shirt C 1 $10.00 20%
TOTAL 60%

Financial Item Original Amount Percentage New Order Amount
Discount Amount $0.00 x 60% $0.00
Subtotal $50.00 x 60% $30.00
Sales Tax $4.00 x 60% $2.40
Shipping Paid $10.00 x 60% $6.00
Order Total $64.00 x 60% $38.40

New Order #2:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Custom T-Shirt 1 $20.00 40%
TOTAL 40%

Financial Item Original Amount Percentage New Order Amount
Discount Amount $0.00 x 40% $0.00
Subtotal $50.00 x 40% $20.00
Sales Tax $4.00 x 40% $1.60
Shipping Paid $10.00 x 40% $4.00
Order Total $64.00 x 40% $25.60

Some Order Items Have a Dollar Value, and Some Have a $0 Value | Example Calculation

When some order items have a positive dollar value and others have no dollar value, ShippingEasy will assign a relative percentage only to the order items with a dollar value. The order items with a dollar value will factor into the resulting split order totals.

The zero dollar value items will not be used in the split order total calculations.

For example:

An order contains 6 posters. You were running a 'buy-one, get-one' sale, so only 3 of the order items came into ShippingEasy with a positive dollar value. The other 3 order items came into ShippingEasy with $0 value.

Sales Tax is 7% on these items. The buyer paid $8 for shipping.

Given the popularity of the sales event, 1 of the paid posters is on back order. And 2 of the free posters are also on back order. These items need to be split out and shipped later.

The Original Order Items:

Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Poster A 1 $15.00 33.33%
Poster B 1 $0.00 0%
Poster C 1 $15.00 33.33%
Poster D 1 $0.00 0%
Poster E 1 $15.00 33.33%
Poster F 1 $0.00 0%
TOTAL 100%

The Original Order Totals:

Financial Item Amount
Discount Amount $0.00
Subtotal $45.00
Sales Tax $3.15
Shipping Paid $8.00
Order Total $56.15

The Resulting Split Orders:

New Order #1:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Poster A 1 $15.00 33.33%
Poster B 1 $0.00 0%
Poster C 1 $15.00 33.33%
TOTAL 66.66%

Discount Amount $0.00 x 66.66% $0.00
Subtotal $45.00 x 66.66% $30.00
Sales Tax $3.15 x 66.66% $2.10

Order Total $56.15 x 66.66% $37.43

New Order #2:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Poster D 1 $0.00 0%
Poster E 1 $15.00 33.33%

Subtotal $45.00 x 33.33% $15.00
Sales Tax $3.15 x 33.33% $1.05
Shipping Paid $8.00 x 33.33% $2.67
Order Total $56.15 x 33.33% $18.72

All Order Items Have a $0 Value | Example Calculation

When none of the order items have a dollar value, ShippingEasy will use the quantity of each order item to assign a relative percentage to each order item. Then each order item will factor into the resulting split order totals.

For example:

An order contains 2 decorative pillows, 1 throw blanket, and 1 area rug. This order was called into your brick-and-mortar location, but needs to be shipped. So you created a manual order in ShippingEasy, but did not enter the sales price for each item.

The customer paid $120 for all the items. Sales Tax is 6.5% on these items. The buyer paid $16 for shipping.

This order needs to be split because all of the items cannot fit in the same box.

The Original Order Items:

Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Decorative Pillow 2 $0.00 50%
Throw Blanket 1 $0.00 25%
Area Rug 1 $0.00 25%
TOTAL 100%

The Original Order Totals:

Financial Item Amount
Discount Amount $0.00
Subtotal $120.00
Sales Tax $7.80
Shipping Paid $16.00
Order Total $127.80

The Resulting Split Orders:

New Order #1:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Decorative Pillow 2 $0.00 50%
Throw Blanket 1 $0.00 25%
TOTAL 75%

Financial Item Original Amount Percentage New Order Amount
Discount Amount $0.00 x 75% $0.00
Subtotal $120.00 x 75% $90.00
Sales Tax $7.80 x 75% $5.85
Shipping Paid $16.00 x 75% $12.00
Order Total $143.80 x 75% $107.85

New Order #2:
Item Qty Cost Percentage of Order Total
Area Rug 1 $0.00 25%
TOTAL 25%

Financial Item Original Amount Percentage New Order Amount
Discount Amount $0.00 x 25% $0.00
Subtotal $120.00 x 25% $30.00
Sales Tax $7.80 x 25% $1.90
Shipping Paid $16.00 x 25% $4.00
Order Total $143.80 x 25% $35.95
