What are the USPS' restrictions on sending mail?

USPS places restrictions on shipping items such as handguns and alcohol.

Most likely the items you need to ship can, in fact, be shipped. This list is not exhaustive, but in most cases, here are the USPS’ restrictions:

  • Stamped mail over 13 oz. must be taken to the Post Office. If a shipment weighs over 13 oz. and is just using stamps and is dropped off in a lobby drop or collection box, it will be returned to you.

  • Although not hazardous, any alcoholic beverage cannot be mailed.

  • Only licensed dealers and manufacturers can mail handguns.

  • Cigarettes and smokeless tobacco generally cannot be mailed. See tobacco restrictions and guidelines for more information.
  • Only registered dispensers and practitioners can mail prescription medications. Over-the-counter medications fall under similar restrictions.
