Printing smaller than expected

It is possible you may need to edit your printer settings if your printed labels are not filling the entire label, and/or the print on the label is small.

  1. Go to the Start Menu and open the Control Panel.
  2. Go to Devices and Printers.
  3. Click on Printers/Faxes.
  4. Then, right-click your thermal printer and select Printing Preferences.
  5. Go to Advanced Options and select your paper size (usually listed as 4x6 or 1744907).
  6. Click OK and then Apply at the bottom of the Printing Preferences window.
If Paper Size is not listed in the Advanced Options tab, it may be necessary to select the 'Printing Defaults...' button at the bottom, choose the Options tab, and set the Paper Format to 'inch' and the Size width and height to 4 and 6.

If you are printing small PDF labels via your web browser, select your browser from the links below to view the recommended solution. If your labels are printing small via ConnectEasy, use the link below to set paper size defaults in ConnectEasy

Multiple labels used with each print

If your DYMO label writer is feeding multiple labels with each print, it is possible the label spool is loose, or the optical sensor is dirty. Follow the steps below to check for these potential printer problems.

  • Loose label spool: It is recommended you re-seat a loose label spool by following the Dymo user guide.
  • Dirty optical sensor: This problem can be corrected by feeding the Labelwriter Cleaning Card through the printer 2-3 times. The Cleaning Card and its instructions are included with your printer.

Print quality problems

If your labels are blurry, smudged, or faded, it is possible for the printer's head or roller is dirty. Feed the label writer cleaning card through the printer 2-3 times to correct this problem. The cleaning card and its instructions are included with your printer.

Label cuts off

If your shipping labels are getting cut off, creating a custom paper size may resolve the problem.

Mac: DYMO printers must use DYMO specific labels.

Windows PCs:

  1. Navigate to the START menu.
  2. Access your Devices and Printers settings.
  3. Locate your DYMO printer. Right-click the printer icon.
  4. Select Printer server properties.
  5. Create a new form with paper size 3.95 x 5.9
  6. Again, right-click the DYMO printer icon.
  7. Select Printing Preferences.
  8. Click the Advanced tab.
  9. From the Paper Size menu, select the new paper you created.

Installation troubleshooting

If you have a DYMO Labelwriter, you will need to install the appropriate printer drivers before using it with ShippingEasy. A driver installation window should open when you first connect the printer to your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer driver.

If you have installed the Dymo printer driver, but cannot print from ShippingEasy, try printing directly from your computer.

If you can print directly from your computer, view our Printer Troubleshooting Guide.

If you cannot print directly from your computer, try the steps below to reinstall your printer drivers:

  1. Unplug the USB cable from your printer.
  2. Depending on your version of Windows, open the "Start" menu and select: "Devices and Printers", "Printers", or "Printers and Faxes".
  3. A DYMO label writer icon should appear on your screen. Right-click this icon and select "Delete" or "Remove Device". Then click "OK" or "Yes" to delete the driver.
  4. Reconnect the USB cable to your printer. A driver installation window should automatically open.
  5. Follow the instructions on-screen as your computer reinstalls the printer.

  1. Unplug the USB cable from your printer.
  2. Open the Apple Apple_icon_with_white_base.png menu on your computer and select System Preferences.
  3. From System Preferences, select Printers & Scanners.
  4. In Printers & Scanners, locate and select your Dymo printer on the left side, and click the Minus button below to remove it from the list.
  5. Reconnect the USB cable to your printer. Click the Plus button at the bottom of the Printers list to select and re-setup your printer.
  6. Your printer should be automatically re-added to your Printers list.

Once the drivers are installed, try printing again from your computer. If you are still unable to print, we would recommend reaching out to Dymo support, or your computer manufacturer for further support.

I have a DYMO 400 turbo that had a nasty paper jam about a week ago. I had to take the printer apart to get rid of the jam. I reassembled the printer and now it claims that the paper is empty. I have a full roll of paper on the tray. Any advice? It flashes at me saying it’s out of paper, but it still advanced the paper when you press the middle button. Advice?

Hello John, and thank you for posting to our Support Center!

It sounds like your label spool may be out of alignment. Dymo typically recommends re-seating your label spool using the steps in their user guide.

If re-seating your label spool does not help, however, we would recommend reaching out to Dymo support directly so they can help you troubleshoot further.

Thank you!

I have a DYMO LabelWriter 4XL. I use it for shipping labels through Shipstation.com. I have it set to print on label size 4"X6" which is exactly the size labels we use. Although it cuts off the top of our labels leaving out the weight and our company name.. Is there a way to fix this? I have gone through settings and could not seem to find a way for it to print the whole label.

Hi Tailwindnutrition2019, and thank you for posting to our Support Center!

It's possible you may need to adjust the margins for your label slightly, specifically the top and bottom margins, or your label spool may be out of alignment. I see that there is some extra empty space at the bottom. You can use the Dymo User Guide linked below for help with that.

If re-seating/re-aligning your label spool does not help, you might also consider reducing the page size of your labels slightly in the Dymo printer settings on your computer.

Thank you!

The power went out at my house, now my Dymo labelwriter 4xl will not turn on. It is like it is not plugged in, which it is. This happened once before and I do not remember what I did to get it working . Advice? Thanks!

Hi Noel,

Thank you for your message!

You could try a hard reset which is unplugging the printer, rebooting the computer, then plugging the printer back in to see if that does the trick.  If it does not, I recommend reaching out to the printer manufacturer, Dymo directly.  Here is their contact us page:  http://www.dymo.com/en-US/online-support-contact-us

I will also link the manual for the Dymo 4XL as well:
